THE ISLAND OF PAG - by area, it is the fifth largest island in the Adriatic Sea, but with a coastline of 302.47 km[1], it is the most indented island of the Adriatic. The island is known for its sparse coverage of vegetation in some parts, whose rocky landscape with aromatic herbs is often compared to the surface of the moon. The island can be reached from the direction of Zadar, i.e. from Posedarje on the south side, by a 340 m long bridge or by ferry to Žigljen in the north of the island from the port of Prizna. is the only Croatian island that is divided between two counties. The northern part of the island (City of Novalja) is located in Lika-Senjska, and the southern part (City of Pag, Municipality of Kolan and Municipality of Povljana) in Zadar County.
In ancient Roman times, the island was rich in greenery, which is why the Romans called it the "golden island". To this day, only 3.8% of the island remains under forest cover. Pastures make up 86% of the surface, and it looks as if it is devoid of vegetation, white as stone. The appearance is enhanced by long dry walls. There is very little under the vineyards, meadows and maquis.
Pag lace is a type of lace that is sewn in the Croatian city of Pag. The first records of Pag lace date back to the 15th century. Benedictine sisters from the monastery of St. Margarita was the main initiator of lacemaking and the lace school in Pag.[5] Pag lace is distinguished by the exceptional beauty of the patterns, quality and method of production, and the tradition of production. In 2009, it was entered into the UNESCO register of intangible cultural heritage.[6]
Pag cheese is a world-famous cheese produced on the island from sheep's milk. It is recognizable by its relatively hard texture, mild saltiness and distinctive smell and taste; and regularly wins prizes at numerous competitions around the world. The cheese from Paška sirana was declared the best sheep's cheese in the world in 2017 and was awarded gold in the sheep's cheese category.
Solana Pag is the largest producer of salt in Croatia, continuing the thousand-year-old tradition of growing salt on the island of Pag.
Olive growing is also an important feature of Pag, especially in the northern, green part of the island. Lun olive oil has a special quality and aroma and is considered one of the best in the Adriatic
