The town of Jelsa is located in a bay, in the middle of the northern part of the island of Hvar. The settlement developed in the 14th century as a fishing port for the nearby settlement of Pitave. Today's Jelsa is a typical Dalmatian place, which from a fishing village has become a favorite tourist destination, with many small shops, located around the main town square, as well as numerous pastry shops, cafes and restaurants with a rich gastronomic offer. Jadrolinija's catamaran runs daily via Bol on Brač to the largest Dalmatian center of Split, and from the nearby Stari Grad ferry port, which is only 10 rides from Jelsa, ferries run between the island of Hvar and Split several times a day.
