Property Tax 2025

Ministry of Economy: Considered Property Tax and Intra-Party Elections. Minister of Economy Ante Šušnjar recently gave an interview to Dnevnik Nove TV, where he addressed current issues regarding the proposed tax reform, specifically the property tax, as well as the upcoming intra-party elections in the Homeland Movement.

Property Tax: Just a Proposal, Not a Reality

In response to questions about potential taxation on second properties, Minister Šušnjar emphasized that this is currently just a proposal. “This proposal must go through several steps, including public consultation and multiple readings in parliament, before it can be implemented,” stated the minister. He also responded to speculation about taxing second properties, noting that it’s unclear where this information originated.

The minister further pointed out the problem of unused properties, which negatively affects the rental market. “We have a large number of vacant properties, making long-term renting unsustainable. We need to find a balance between protecting citizens' investments and efficiently utilizing available properties,” said Šušnjar.

Distinguishing Between Property Investments

Another key question is whether the state will differentiate between individual property owners. Šušnjar stressed the need to distinguish between people who own two properties and those who have invested in twenty. “If someone has invested in twenty properties and supported the economy, we need to find a way to recognize this activity rather than penalize it,” the minister said.

Intra-Party Elections: Transparency and Stability

Šušnjar also addressed questions regarding the upcoming intra-party elections in the Homeland Movement, scheduled for tomorrow. He emphasized that the Homeland Movement is a reliable partner in the government, which is reflected in positive economic indicators such as GDP growth and reduced inflation.

The minister dismissed any speculation about election manipulation and stated that the elections will be fully transparent. “There will be 103 observers present at the elections to ensure their fairness,” he assured. He also rejected claims that he should leave the party if his faction loses the elections. “This is not a war but a competition. If we lose, we will discuss the situation and seek the best solution for the party's future,” added Šušnjar.

Minister Šušnjar believes that the Homeland Movement will remain a stable and constructive force in Croatian politics after the elections. “I’m not afraid of losing voter support; I believe in our vision and our values,” he concluded the interview.
